Alvis Leo Rock, son of James Audrey and Oma Mearl Jordan Rock, was born on May 23, 1919 in Haywood, Oklahoma in Pittsburg County. He passed from this life on Thursday, April 15, 2010 in Stilwell, Oklahoma at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 23 days. Alvis was born near McAlester, Oklahoma in 1919. He married Esther Thompson on April 12, 1939. During World War II, Alvis served in the 24th Infantry, 21st Battalion, Company B and fought bravely for his country in the Philippines and Japan, earning the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal. He also served as a welder while in the service. Slim the Junker was in the Iron Metal business from 1953 until his death. His was a familiar face around town. He was known and loved by many in Stilwell. Alvis was preceded in death by his parents: James and Oma Rock, wife: Esther, brothers: James Leonard Rock, Jewel Augusta Rock, Ralph Willard Rock, Ronald David Rock, sisters: Eunice Irene Rock, Wanda Lee Rock and soninlaw: Cleburn Cook. Surviving him are his children: James Rock and wife Phyllis of Stilwell, OK, Jerry Rock and wife Diane of Stilwell, OK, Joanne Cook of Tonopah, AZ, Jane Hooper and husband Robert of Bunch, OK, brother: Glenn Dale Rock and wife Raythene of Oklahoma City, OK, 11 grandchildren: Jerri Ann Stilwell, Janice Clinton and husband Rick, Jeff Rock and wife Sarah, Donna Rock, Johnny Rock, April Rock, Scott Rock and wife Shannon, all of Stilwell, OK, Brian Cook and wife Joye Beth of Excelsior Springs, MO, Pam Litton and husband Bruce of Hamilton, MO, Samuel Hooper of Eureka, CA, Seth Hooper of Bunch, OK, 18 great grandchildren: McKayla, Matt and Micah Rock, Ashley Stilwell, Aaron and Zack Ballard, Chelsea and Chandler Rock, Jaynelle and Traig Wilson, Kyler and Josiah Killer, all of Stilwell, OK, Brandi Cook of Excelsior Springs, MO, Kelsey, Katie and Keithan Litton of Hamilton, MO, Robert Jayden Hooper of Eureka, CA, Marvin Le Roy of Stilwell, OK, 2 great great grandchildren: Andraya and Tylee Ford of Stilwell, OK, many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at RobertsReedCulver Funeral Chapel, Stilwell, OK, with Bro. Charles Duvall and Jack Steele officiating. Interment to follow at Stilwell City Cemetery under the direction of RobertsReedCulver Funeral Home.
