Jewell (McCully) West was from a large family of nine. Because of her mother's serious illness, Jewell learned to take care of family at an early age. In 1948, she met Bob Lee West and they were married on February 11, 1950 at the Stilwell First Baptist parsonage. She used her homemaking skills to help around their farm.
She made and sold butter, canned vegetables from their garden, made jellies and preserves, and raised chickens. Her cooking skills were well known and enjoyed by the farmers she fed during the threshing season. While keeping her household running, she always found time to visit with neighbors and to visit church shut-ins.
When her youngest child started school, Jewell decided to get a teaching degree at NSU. She graduated in 1971 and started her teaching career at Zion Elementary School in Stilwell. Although she taught grades three and five, the majority of her career was spent teaching first grade. In 1985, she earned her Master of Education degree from NSU. She enjoyed working with small children and teaching them to read. She has many fond memories of her teaching career.
She retired from teaching in May 1992. Her hobbies included going to estate sales, collecting dishes, shopping for shoes and cooking family dinners.
Jewell and Bob moved to Go Ye Village in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in May of 2014. Their life was extended because of the excellent atmosphere Go Ye Village provided them. Jewell made many friendships and often mentioned how much she enjoyed being there.
