John Strauss

January 9, 1917 — November 15, 2015

John Nick Strauss, son of Frank Albert and Ethel Dobbins Strauss, was born January 9, 1917 in Ganado, TX. He departed this life November 15, 2015 at the age of 98 years, 10 months and 6 days.
He moved with his family from Texas to Stilwell at the age of four. In 1939, he joined the navy after working for Parker Brothers for several years.
After World War II, he returned to Stilwell, and was married to Tommie Ruth Harris on June 18, 1948 and to this union two children were born: Larry Nick and Pamela.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie Ruth; his parents, two brothers: Murray and Jamie Strauss; two sisters: Maureen McPherson and Virginia Moreland.
Nick loved his family and farm. His family was the love of his life, as well his community and Grace Chapel, where he gave his heart to the Lord upon returning from his Naval Service in World War II.
He served his country as a Chief Machinist Mate in the Navy, aboard the USS Augusta, USS Monitor and USS Indian Island, totaling 63 months of active sea duty, earning the American Area Campaign Medal and the American Defense Medal; and three stars for the European Mid-E Campaign. He served in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Battle of Normandy.
Nick made his home on the family farm in Stilwell while he was working as a pipefitter traveling to Colorado, Kansas and the Dakotas.
He is survived by: One son, Larry Nick and his wife, Cheryl Deweese Strauss; also, daughter Pamela Strauss Carson and husband Jim Carson. Five grandchildren: Amanda Stone and husband Patrick of Tulsa, OK; Andrea Turnbow and husband Justin of Tulsa, OK; Sarah Carson of Stilwell; Stephanie LaCaze and husband Ryan of Tulsa, OK; James Nicholas Carson (Nick) of Stilwell. Three great grandchildren: Gaby Torres of Stilwell; Keaton Turnbow and Sawyer Stone of Tulsa, OK, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2015 at Roberts/Reed-Culver Chapel, Stilwell, OK with Pastor Max Ford officiating. Interment followed at Stilwell City Cemetery, Stilwell, Oklahoma
