Martin Dean "Chief" Johnson of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, passed away on August 12, 2024. He was born on November 30, 1935, in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He was 88 years old.
Martin honorably served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1959, dedicating four years to his country during a pivotal time. After his military service, he embarked on a lifelong career as a machine shop mechanic. Martin also showcased his skills as a farrier and ranch manager. He also taught welding classes at Hill College in Hillsboro, TX after he retired.
Beyond his professional life, Martin was deeply involved in a variety of hobbies that reflected his vibrant and engaging personality. He was an avid golfer, participated in rodeos, and even entertained crowds as a rodeo clown. His love for music and dance was evident in his role as a square dance caller. Martin was also a dedicated member of the Shriners and Masons, further demonstrating his commitment to community service.
Martin is survived by his children Deanna K. Johnson of Kyle, TX, Gracie Klinger of Tahlequah, OK, Gerrie Johnson of Sapulpa, OK, Robyn Bowerman of Austin, TX and Lewis Johnson and wife Cecile of Bartlesville, OK. Additionally, he had eleven grandchildren, Billy, Kelsi, Pam, Jeromy, Karen, Justin, Chad, Scott, Stacy, Macen, Allen, eleven great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert W. Johnson and Orma G. (Pitzer) Johnson, brothers Sam, John, and Ray Johnson, and son James Dalton (JD) Johnson.
In honor of Martin's wishes and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Soldiers Angel’s, charitable registration number: 20-0583415. This charity supports families of fallen soldiers.
The family is being assisted by Roberts-Reed-Culver Funeral Home in Stilwell, OK. Martin's life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as a man who lived fully with courage, humor, and a deep love for his family and country.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Vian, Ok on Saturday August 24th, 2024, from 2pm-4pm.
The family requests that no alcohol be present at the Celebration of Life.
