Mary Lee Pettit or “Mel” as she was mostly known, was born on February 3, 1954 in Marble City, Oklahoma to Dave and Fannie Cheater and passed away peacefully on January 7, 2021 in Stilwell, Oklahoma at the age of 66 years, 11 months, and 4 days.
Mel loved playing softball, going fishing, and throwing horseshoes. She enjoyed spending time with her kids but most importantly her grandkids. In 1969, Mel married the love of her life. It was 51 years filled with happiness. Aside from being a wife, she loved being a teacher. Mel taught English and Cherokee for 20 plus years. She later retired in February of 2017. Mel was a special lady who had many friends. Everyone who knew her loved her dearly and she will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her son: Michael Don Pettit, sister: Rosa Lee Cheater, brothers: David Cheater, and Daniel Cheater, and great-grandson: Javion Armando Netro.
Mary is survived by her husband: Jack Pettit, son: Jack Pettit of Stilwell, Oklahoma, daughters: Marie Ladrillero of Stilwell, Oklahoma, and Jennifer Pettit of Sallisaw, Oklahoma. Brothers: Marvin and Jimmy Cheater, sisters: Lorene Roberts, Birdir Willson, and Charlene Remiglo all of Marble City, Oklahoma. 14 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
