Sammie Jo Starr Clemons passed away Friday, March 18, 2022 at the age of 93 at her home in Oklahoma City. She was born June 27,1928 in Stilwell, OK. to Samuel Jesse and Nellie Whitmire Starr. She graduated from Stilwell High School in 1946. She attended Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, OK, receiving a bachelor of science in Education in 1953. Sammie Jo loved teaching elementary school. She taught school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then in Anchorage, Alaska, until her retirement in 1989. She moved back to Oklahoma in 1990 to be near family.
She was active in her church including playing piano for services until her health declined. She supported many causes from animals to political, and most of all to her Christian faith.
She loved her Pekingese dogs that she had close by throughout her life and they were the center of her attention.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel J. and Nellie Whitmire Starr; her siblings Jewel Reid, Colbert Starr, Wynona Nelson, Billy Starr, Betty Jeanne Crittendon; and former spouse Felix Clemons. She is survived by countless nieces and nephews who loved her as “JoJo”.
She will be buried at the Stilwell City Cemetery by Roberts Reed Culver Funeral Home. A celebration of her life is planned in Oklahoma City in the near future.
