Vernon Hitcher

May 4, 1948 — January 4, 2025

Vernon Hitcher was born May 4, 1948, in Stilwell OK to Clarence Hitcher and Glorena (Crittenden) Hitcher and passed away in Tulsa Oklahoma Jan 4, 2025, with his loving family at his side.

Vernon was a United States Army 1st Signal Brigade Sergeant and served his country in Vietnam. He received 3 medals during his service: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. For years he worked for several newspapers from Okmulgee to Fayetteville, ending up working and retiring from Baldor Motors in Westville. As we all suspected, retirement did not suit him well; the last and final job he loved most was working at Peavine School. Being around the kids and the staff brought him so much joy. He was hardly ever serious and that's why he enjoyed the kids and they enjoyed him. He helped in his community taking care of countless friends and family over the years. He loved his family and took care of each and every one of them throughout the years, no matter the need. He had a love for animals, watching the birds and squirrels as they played around his feeders outside the house. You could see him and his dog Brutus driving around town at any time during the day. Sonic trips were their favorite pastime. He will be missed by everyone.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; brother Nick Hummingbird, and sister Myrna Sue (Susie) Shell.

He is survived by his wife Karen Hitcher, 2 sons Wilson Hitcher and wife Melanie of Stilwell, Benjamin Hitcher and wife Melissa of Springdale Arkansas, Daughter Lee Ann Hitcher Springdale Arkansas, 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers Willie Hitcher and wife Toni of Dallas Texas, and Pete Hitcher of Stilwell Oklahoma, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family and community of friends that he will be deeply missed by.
