Vernon Smith

September 19, 1927 — July 21, 2017

Vernon Smith, son of Hiras Dexter and Mary Melinda (Carpenter) Smith, was born on September 19, 1927 in Adair County, Oklahoma and passed from this life on Friday, July 21, 2017 at his home in the Peavine area of Stilwell, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years.

He served his nation proudly during the Korean War from November 1950 until September 1952. He was a member of the 45th Division - 179th Infantry - 2nd Battalion "G" Company. Vernon was awarded an Army Occupation Medal (Japan), Korean Service Medal w/ B2 Star service medal and a Combat Infantry Badge.

Vernon married the love of his life, Margie Collins, on January 25, 1954 and they were blessed with a long life and a wonderful family.

He held many jobs during his lifetime. He worked at Sun Oil, Hudson, Campbell Soup in Fayetteville, AR and at Baldor Electric for over 20 years.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents: Hiras and Mary Smith, siblings: Oliver, Dean, Johnnie, Noble, Raymond, Tennie Campbell, Leona Workman and Mary Winkler.

He leaves behind a loving family that includes his wife: Margie Smith of the home, sons: Steve Smith, Jeff Smith, Kevin Smith and wife Debbie, all of Stilwell, OK, seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, a multitude of other relatives and friends.

There will be a family gathering at Peavine Holiness Mission.
