Viola Jessie Bales, daughter of Alfred and Jessie Viola (Bowen) Guthrie, was born on April 3, 1943 in Boxley, Arkansas and departed this life on Saturday, February 20, 2016 in Springdale, Arkansas at the Circle of Life Hospice Center at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 17 days.
She married the love of her life Vernus Bales on September 1, 1960 and to their union 5 children were born, 4 daughters and 1 son.
Viola became a minister of the Pentecostal holiness faith. She began preaching God's Word in 1960. She would travel to various churches with her husband, Vernus, by her side. They would preach, sing and hold revivals, winning souls for the Lord.
She began to perform marriage ceremonies for different couples throughout her ordained ministry years. She also traveled and did missionary work with Bobby Hogan Ministries out of Van Buren, AR. Viola traveled to Mexico, where she would sing, preach and do missionary work.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Alfred and Jessie Guthrie, husband: Vernus Bales, great grandson: Kaden Crow, brothers: Leslie Guthrie and Freddy Guthrie and sister: Geraldine Strode.
She is survived by a very loving family that includes her 4 daughters: Viola Ruth Colston and husband Charles of Stilwell, OK, Dianna Kay Hart and husband Donald of Hulbert, OK, Lora Jean Gallardo and husband Jose of Stilwell, Sandy Renee Stewart and husband Ray of Tahlequah, OK, son: Vernus Glen Bales of Stilwell, 9 grandchildren: Charla and Eddie Kelley, Kayla and Seth Crow, Andrew and
Jenny Hart, Brandon and Cassey Hart, Donald Ryan and Natalee Hart, Rosita and John Boyce, Jose and Sydney Gallardo, Kyle Stewart, Trenton Stewart, great grandchildren: Elijah Mize, Mackenzie Mize, Stephen Mize, Kianna Crow, Sofia Gallardo, Kingston Boyce, 5 siblings: Lemuel Guthrie, Liman Guthrie, Eileen St. Martin, Nina Guthrie, Wanda Russell, brother-in-law: Jimmy Bales and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 pm on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Roberts/Reed-Culver Chapel, Stilwell, OK with Pastor Tony Rogers and Bro. Richard Sanders officiating. Interment followed at Long Prairie Cemetery, Little Kansas, Oklahoma.
