Vonnie Turner

May 3, 1930 — November 30, 2018

Vonnie Lowell Turner departed this world on November 30, 2018 to be with our Lord in heaven. He was born in Eufaula, Oklahoma on May 3, 1930. He was 88 years old and the oldest son, of his parents, Donnie Lowell and Clara Mae Turner. They raised 5 boys and 4 girls on their farm in Oklahoma during through the depression of the 1930's.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Turner, last December 13th, 2017. They were married on May 2, 1949 and loved each other for 68 years. They raised four children, Linda, Darrell, Elaine, and Kitty. They resided primarily in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area.

He was a truck driver for over 42 years providing for his family which was always first with him. He was a loving father who was well loved and respected by all his family and friends.

He started part time with Time Freight Lines in 1964 and drove for them for 7 years on the road. In 1970, he returned to Tulsa, Oklahoma and started to haul heavy equipment for Tulsa Paving for several years. Vonnie later moved over to Mc Michaels Construction. After several years there he worked briefly for Standard Industries and then finished his career out hauling heavy equipment with Keck Construction.

He also cut wood part time. He loved being in the outdoors working with his saws to fill his customers firewood orders for their chimneys.

The only hobby he ever had was to go hunting once a year during deer season and he only started that in 1975. It became a yearly tradition for him and his only son Darrell who passed in 2009.

Dads actual hobby and love was working to make sure his family had everything we needed and helping others with his good deeds.

His peers and family thought he would never retire. But he did retire briefly in 1992 when they moved back home to Sallisaw, Oklahoma. After taking a few years off to clear the farm they had bought and to build a barn, he did go back to work part time driving a truck until 2005.

He served as a church deacon since he was 46 years old. He started with Suncrest Baptist Church in Tulsa, Blount Baptist Church in Sallisaw and Way of the Cross Freewill Baptist Church in Sallisaw, Oklahoma. He was always there to help those in need.

In retirement, he enjoyed working his farm north of Sallisaw, Oklahoma. He loved fixing and tinkering with machinery, working in the outdoors in his Oklahoma hills and growing a garden every year and helping Joyce with all her rose bushes and other flowers. He got his picture in the Sallisaw paper every year for growing the biggest cabbages in Sequoyah County.

Vonnie Turner will be deeply missed by anyone who crossed his path. He was that kind of guy and so special... He is already deeply missed by his family and his community.
